Plumbing Materials & Tool Guide
A practical planning checklist for common fixture repairs and plumbing work. Pipe type, diameter, fittings, joining method, supports, and test requirements depend on the existing system, intended use, local code, and product instructions.
Know the limits: Water, drain, vent, gas, and fire-protection piping have different requirements. This guide does not size pipes or approve a design. Gas piping, concealed work, major drain/vent changes, and work requiring permits should be handled by qualified professionals. Shut off and verify the correct supply before opening a system.

Pipe and fitting reference
| System / material | Typical context | Verify before using |
|---|---|---|
| PEX | Potable water distribution where permitted. | Exact tubing type, fitting system, tool, insert/support requirements, UV protection, temperature/pressure rating, and local approval. |
| Copper | Potable water supply in compatible systems. | Type/size, fitting method, flux/solder compatibility, fire safety, and transition fitting approval. |
| CPVC | Hot/cold potable supply where permitted. | Pipe and fitting system, solvent cement/primer requirements, cure time, temperature, and pressure rating. |
| PVC | Commonly used for approved drain, waste, vent, or other specified applications—not a universal hot-water pipe. | Schedule, diameter, application approval, cement, support, expansion, and local code. |
| ABS | Drain/waste/vent applications where approved. | Local approval, material compatibility, correct cement, and transition details. |
| Flexible fixture connector | Connecting a fixture to a compatible shutoff valve. | Correct length, end connection, pressure/temperature rating, bend radius, and manufacturer replacement guidance. |
| Shutoff valve | Isolating fixture or branch supply. | Pipe connection type, size, accessibility, and compatibility with existing pipe. |
| Drain trap and gasket | Fixture drain connection. | Correct size, trap configuration, slope, venting, cleanout access, and code requirements. |
Testing and closeout
- Confirm the correct shutoff is closed and pressure is relieved before disassembly.
- Protect the work area and keep compatible replacement parts organized.
- Use only the joining method, sealant, and cure time specified for the system.
- Restore supply slowly and inspect every disturbed joint for leaks.
- Operate the fixture through its normal range and check again after use.
- For drain work, run sufficient water to check joints and verify proper drainage without leaks or backup.
- Follow required inspection and pressure/leak testing procedures for permitted or concealed work.
