Roofing Materials & Takeoff Guide

A practical checklist for estimating common asphalt-shingle roofing supplies. Use actual roof-plane measurements whenever possible; the footprint of the house is not the roof area.

Safety first: Roof work involves fall hazards. This page is for planning and material estimating, not a guide to working at height. Use appropriate fall protection and qualified help. Roof pitch, valleys, flashing, ventilation, and local code can change the material list.
Quick estimator

Estimate shingles and basic coverage

Enter the total measured sloped roof area in square feet. If you only know the building footprint, do not use it as roof area without accounting for pitch, overhangs, and roof geometry.

Roofing material list

Check each line as you confirm quantities from the actual roof plan, product label, and supplier takeoff.

What to measure separately

ComponentHow to take it offImportant notes
ShinglesRoof surface area ÷ 100 = squares; multiply by selected bundles per square.Use package coverage, account for roof shape and waste, and round up to full bundles.
Starter stripMeasure eaves and any rake edges where the selected system requires starter. Some products have different eave/rake requirements. Follow the shingle system instructions.
Ridge and hip capsMeasure each ridge and hip line in linear feet.Coverage per bundle varies by product and cap method; do not assume standard coverage.
Drip edgeMeasure eaves and rakes separately; account for laps and corners.Length, profile, and installation sequence must match local requirements and roof assembly.
UnderlaymentMeasure roof planes and use roll coverage after accounting for required laps.Roll coverage printed on packaging may not equal installed coverage.
Ice barrierMeasure required protected zones, eaves, valleys, and other specified locations.Requirements depend on local code, climate, roof details, and approved assembly.
FlashingCount and measure chimneys, sidewalls, headwalls, valleys, plumbing vents, and other penetrations.Details vary; reuse of old flashing should be evaluated rather than assumed.
VentilationCalculate using the building design and applicable code/manufacturer guidance.Do not size vents from roof area alone without considering net-free area and intake/exhaust balance.
Nails and accessoriesUse product instructions and roof area/layout to determine fastener type and quantity.Nail length, placement, and fastening pattern affect wind performance and warranty.

Tools and equipment checklist

Tool needs depend on roof type and scope. Fall protection, access equipment, and safe work planning are not optional.

Order-check sequence

  1. Confirm the roofing product, color, exposure, warranty requirements, and compatible accessory system.
  2. Verify measured roof-plane areas and waste with a roof plan or qualified roofer.
  3. Measure eaves, rakes, ridges, hips, valleys, wall intersections, and penetrations independently.
  4. Check sheathing condition, ventilation, flashing, and required ice/water protection before ordering.
  5. Confirm delivery, weather protection, disposal, permit requirements, and site safety plan.
