Pool Maintenance

A straightforward pool-care checklist for water testing, circulation, cleaning, and seasonal opening or closing.

Every day or swim day

Quick checks

  • Confirm the pump is running normally and water is circulating.
  • Empty skimmer and pump baskets as needed with equipment safely shut off.
  • Remove leaves and debris from the surface.
  • Check water level and look for unusual leaks or equipment noise.
Several times a week

Water balance

  • Test sanitizer and pH; test other parameters on a regular schedule.
  • Adjust chemicals based on measured results and product labels.
  • Never mix pool chemicals together or add water to concentrated chemicals.
  • Keep chemicals in original containers, dry, ventilated, and away from children and pets.

Weekly routine

  • Brush walls, steps, corners, and waterline.
  • Vacuum or run the cleaner.
  • Inspect filter pressure against the clean-filter baseline.
  • Clean cartridges or backwash only as directed for your filter.
  • Check hoses, fittings, seals, and visible corrosion.

Opening / closing

  • Follow the pool and equipment manufacturers’ seasonal procedures.
  • Inspect covers, ladders, handrails, and safety barriers.
  • Winterize plumbing and equipment according to local freeze conditions.
  • After opening, verify circulation and water chemistry before swimming.
Safety first: Never mix chlorine products with acids or other chemicals. Follow label directions, use appropriate protection, secure chemicals, and keep electrical equipment and cords away from water. Do not swim until water clarity and chemistry meet safe guidance.

Pool chemistry depends on sanitizer type, temperature, bather load, and product labels. This checklist does not replace the instructions for your specific system.
